ChatGPT has triggered a frenzy of excitement. That frenzy comes from the fact that the large language models (LLMs) behind ChatGPT and other chatbots fit so nicely with the mindset of those we have called Digitally Trained Individuals – that is, those having been trained by digital technology to seek novelty, be impatient, elevate their expectations, become resourceful and develop their own process for determining how to get what they want. Yet not only will large language models create new content, they will do so at scale; they will, in short, become a force of disruption on steroids. To name just a few areas in which disruptions will occur: online search, start-ups, journalism, advertising, art and artists, education, and truth, trust and reality. While those closely involved in artificial intelligence (AI) and LLMs suggest being careful moving forward, the digital industry companies have started a race to avoid losing market position and to capture significant portions of a new market, creating the frenzy that has erupted. Eventually, markets will calm down, and the frenzy will move elsewhere, yet AI, LLMs and other digital innovations will enhance businesses and expand economic growth.
