Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are changing industrial culture, altering what were once careers and shifting the way individuals interact with technology. AI holds much promise in what it might be capable of doing, and already in medicine, AI has become a force for enhanced diagnosis and care. However, in some areas of business, the promise – so far – exceeds its ability. In those areas, what might be called AI Lite is causing some companies to pull back from an all-out push toward AI everything. Meanwhile, robotics continues to replace workers in factories, stores and even homes, but changes are occurring so rapidly that at least one once-successful robot-production house is closing. Moreover, the intertwining of AI and robotics has also proven less than originally expected. The reality is that effectiveness in AI is developing more slowly than many had anticipated.
