In the Chaos Economy, which we have outlined in the recent past, extremes have become normal and valuations have become inflated. Risk, it seems, has been put on the back burner. The wealthy keep getting wealthier and have turned their attention to manipulating society and the government to their own advantage through monetary donations and other tactics. Obsessions, whether they are sending humans to Mars or promoting artificial intelligence (AI), no matter the risks, have become the mainstay of some Silicon Valley billionaires. We look at these obsessions by focusing on four areas: Rules, Which Are Bad; Gambling and Gaming, Which Are Good; Risk, Which Doesn’t Matter; and Taxes, Which Are Bad. After surveying these areas in this first of a two-part Briefing, we turn in Part II to the pushback that has started against those leveraging their wealth and power to get their way and against the obsessions that they are pursuing.
