Artificial intelligence (AI) has been creating quite a stir, triggering spending sprees, changing many corporations’ operations and fostering growing resistance from the public. Yet what we see really happening is society slowly and with difficulty adjusting to the spread of AI. Part of that expansion has brought a huge increase in the volume of content output, a plethora of supply that far outstrips demand. As a result, the spread of AI capabilities has created several cultural tensions. We have noticed four different tensions between values that the new technology embodies and several values that society has found important in the past: Productivity Over Originality; Ease Over Precision; Quantity Over Quality; and Efficiency Over Nearly Everything. Society will need to find a way forward through these tensions to land on a place for AI, not just in the economy but in the culture.
