Cyber-Rattling

Cyber-Rattling

The ongoing battle in cyber-space continues to escalate, actually breaking through the veneer of silence that has marked such events in the past. Each side has made some of its successful ventures public, evidently seeking to embarrass the adversary. Cyber-espionage has become more widespread, as many cyber-adventures are intended not to damage invaded systems but to yield more insights into an adversary’s systems. Meanwhile, cyber-crime is being used to fund cyber-warriors, with some cyber-criminals, especially in Russia, working for the state to earn more freedom for their cyber-criminal activities. This escalation and spreading of cyber-attacks have made it more critical to discern attacks early and to be able to identify those behind the attack. Taken together, recent cyber-activities represent a kind of cyber-rattling—making claims of elevated capabilities—which could, if not held in check, lead to physical battles.
