Decision-Making In Uncertain Times

Decision-Making In Uncertain Times

We live in confusing and uncertain times that are driving anxiety. At least that is what psychologists have concluded. Taking a closer look at the brain, scientists have seen that it does not like to be occupied with stressful issues; therefore, it accepts stressful questions from any source it has decided to trust. Researchers have observed that the brain needs both emotion and reason to make decisions. Yet today, American society seems to be split into those who accept emotional stories and those who accept rational stories. America has lost its Grand Narrative, and that has resulted in individuals searching for an identity that fits the confusing world. They are grabbing ideas and beliefs from everywhere, whether these ideas and beliefs accurately reflect reality or not. In the current era of uncertainty, decisions must be made, and we suggestfive guidelines to assist in making them: (1) Use the Whole Brain – Emotion and Reason; (2) Get Comfortable with Ignorance; (3) Beware of Digitally Derived Answers; (4) Be Very Cautious of Theories, Ideologies and Other Obsessions (i.e., See Evidence Objectively); (5) Seek Out Contrary Information; and (6) Use a Multidisciplinary Methodology.
