World War III has started, even though it is little noticed. Like wars in the past, this one involves conflicts over borders and boundaries. But the borders and boundaries precipitating World War III are not merely political or moral. Battles are also erupting over the borders and boundaries of privacy, genetic engineering, academic disciplines, economic models, health care and even personal identity.
We have noticed the growing tensions between those who encourage the crossing or breaking down of existing borders and those who would protect them. Thus, we bring together here some examples from battlefronts of environment, health, sovereignty and culture. Part I of this Briefing looks at the actions that transgress existing barriers. Part II looks at the responses of those who seek to retain and strengthen challenged borders and also examines the overall context of World War III.
