Data versus fuel might sound like a strange contest, but that is how new kind sof globalizing enterprises view a critical shift in potential economic growth. The industria lera grew through the use of carbon-based fuels, while the next economic order will be driven by the aggregation and exploitation o fdata. At least, that is how Jack Ma the head of Alibaba and Ant Financial, and several other leaders of the internationalization of e-commerce view what they are doing. Ma, in a recent speech, laid out several areas in which significant changes will determine which enterprises will thrive in the years ahead. He called for: New Retail, New Manufacturing, New Finance, New Technology and a New Resource for Growth. That last item is where the aggregation, assessment and exploitation of data creates momentum for the next economic order. While that is Ma’s perspective, and he is working hard to realize those changes in Alibaba’s realm, other e-commerce entities are pursuing parts or all of those objectives. Their activities are part of the transition to a new economic order.
