Education In The Coming Era Of Artificial Intelligence

The Great Education Restructuring continues to concern educators and parents, as well as create more and more anxiety among students. The era of artificial intelligence (AI) that is rapidly approaching will likely alter the processes of workplaces, governments, financial institutions and most other organizations dependent on decision-making. Yet the educational process is bogged down by an approach launched during the era of manufacturing, what might be called the factory school. While predicting what society will look like in 2030 is a fool’s game, especially with the AI kicker in the works, three things seem to be already starting and will be fully developed in the future: (1) Individual’s Accumulation of Knowledge will give way to Access to Accumulated Knowledge (and Discrimination as to its legitimacy); (2) Human-Centered Decision-Making will give way to Machine-Centered Decision-Making; and (3) Human-Based Learning will have to make peace with and blend in with Machine-Based Learning. Those shifts alone would mandate significant changes in how (the process) and what (the content) we use to educate the next generations. For the most part, education reformers so far have mostly focused their actions on the how. At present, the what is being rethought. Perhaps those working on the content as well as those focused on the process of education could use some help from artificial intelligence.
