Effects Of The New Video Paradigm

Like many Americans, broadcast and cable television has traditionally taken a summer break. That was possible when viewers had no other options. But with more entertainment choices than ever, and with streamers now vying for consumers’ attention, this year’s summer break led to a milestone in July, when, for the first time ever, Americans watched more streaming programming than cable or broadcast television. As we move into the fall season, with television’s strongest programming – NFL football – broadcast and cable channels’ former advantage appears to be almost completely diminished. Starting in the second week of the NFL season, most Thursday night football games will be available to a national audience through Amazon’s Prime Video and Twitch streaming services; Sunday afternoon games will air and stream on CBS, Fox and Paramount Plus; and Sunday evening games will stream on Peacock, while also airing on NBC. Adding to the evolving picture is the most recent Primetime Emmy Awards, where streaming services won a combined 10 statues (not including the combined cable and streaming HBO/HBO Max) while Abbott Elementary and Saturday Night Live were the only two shows that debuted on broadcast television to win an award.
