Esports: Between The Reality And The Hype

It is true that the esports industry is growing. Viewership of esports is increasing, and the amount of advertising and marketing dollars being spent on the industry is increasing. Companies from outside esports, such as retailers, are attempting to take advantage of its growing cultural relevance by partnering with video-game teams and players. It is also true that some esports viewership numbers have been inflated, that some esports companies and related businesses have shut down, and that growth expectations for some investors haven’t been met. Creating a new sport, new leagues and new fans will take time. Finding the right business models and revenue sources will also take time. However, the interest in watching people play competitive video games continues on an upward trajectory, and that is the reality.
