In February, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that global exports of wheat in the preceding six months were 37 percent lower than the year prior. Along with the continuation of several regional conflicts – including the war in Ukraine – additional stresses on food supply include the growing global population, increasing numbers of Chinese citizens joining the middle class and demanding improved nutrition and food variety, fertilizer overuse, fresh water deficits, labor shortages and last, but not least, worsening climate change. Over the last few years, we have described these overwhelming stresses on the food production cycle. But bad news has precipitated action, including a restructuring of the food industry with new technologies, production methods and means of distribution.
