Geoengineering Moves From The Sci-Fi Fringe

As society pulls back from aggressive environmental actions, conditions have worsened, from record-setting heat waves to constant flooding and even to Arctic ice melts happening faster than anticipated only two years ago. And emissions continue to increase. Scientists have grown frustrated by the small effect their dire warnings have had and are turning to more extreme actions. They are trying to reflect the sun’s rays back into space, cool the oceans by extracting carbon dioxide, suck up air to remove the CO2 and spray deep-ocean water onto Artic ice to preserve the ice sheets. All these projects have questionable science behind them, and critics say they are creating their own societal problem – encouraging the public to believe that engineers and scientists will save society from having to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. Geoengineering might work, or it might make things worse, but it seems to be moving ahead regardless.
