The world seemed set on curtailing the negative effects of global warming, working to cut greenhouse gas emissions and to change habits around energy use. The pace of negative climate change has increased faster than anticipated only a few years ago, with 2023 being the warmest in 120,000 years. Yet the momentum behind efforts to curtail global warming seems to be slowing. Drivers of the slowdown are manifest: Capital and Costs; Government Actions; Company Practices; and Individual Behavior. This has led some scientific and political leaders to advocate for a practice that just a few years ago was considered extreme and dangerous: bioengineering. Others believe such a practice brings additional risks to an already fraught condition.
Losing momentum in green projects will be costly, and rapid increases in costs could ultimately bring action that revives momentum.
