If society musters the energy and resources to combat changes in the natural environment, that could well become a harbinger of society’s moving toward a breakout from the Disorienting Environment. Because climate change is an international issue and requires international action, it could form the basis for a larger international set of objectives and shared interests. At present, nationalism, which provides what on its surface seems like a clear answer to the confusion and uncertainty of the era, actually blocks such a development. Getting past such a narrow focus and moving toward a balanced international perspective will be the challenge of the next decade.
