Artificial intelligence’s (AI’s) creation of inauthentic accounts, inappropriate imagery and other nefarious products routinely goes undetected on sites f rom LinkedIn to Threads. Such ruses are just part of the fakeness spreading across society. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is worried about the accuracy of the data he is receiving. Some of the most popular influencers are avatars created by unknown sources. Some “finfluencers” (i.e., online financial influencers) are trusted more than professional human advisors. Fake rock bands are playing AI-generated music. AI-generated customer service agents are conversing with customers of the Golden Nugget casino. People trust online voices saying that a horse medicine can control or cure cancer. Deepfake videos depict politicians doing and saying things they never said or did. Fake everything is leading to a basic question: Is this rea l? What can be believed? Some reactions to this slide toward unreality are surfacing, and they will affect companies and the economy down the road.
