Labor Redux

Labor Redux

The effects of globalization on supply chains and a sense of helplessness among virus-stressed workers are leading to reassessments of increasingly politicized trade and constantly changing jobs. During the pandemic, the United States and the EuropeanUnion have experienced unanticipated vulnerabilities in supply chains and disruptions injust-in-time deliveries, leading them to take a closer look at their strategic needs and to reassess how and where critical goods are manufactured and how they are distributed.Meanwhile, labor experiences are encouraging workers to search for a better way to deal with their sense of helplessness, and for a growing number of them, that has meant a turn to unions. Together, a global rethink of foreign production and supply-chain risks and a worker rethink of isolation and vulnerability have given unions more attention, a majority of it positive. Are unions ready for their new appeal?
