Living With Disruption

Living With Disruption

Uncertainty is embedded in nature, but humans have determined that certainty is more workable. Lately, the certainty about certainty has been shaken, as human institutions and behavior have undermined the foundations on which such certainty has been built. Now, the lack of certainty could be the rule going forward, and that likelihood has forced some human adjustments. We have identified four: Ease the Mind; Broaden the Outlook; Find the Authentic Self; and Reassess and Experiment. These are the initial ways individuals are reconciling their past expectations, which were developed in a world that seemed to favor a feeling of certainty, to new expectations in a world that is more and more exhibiting uncertainty as its basic reality. Individuals will need to “learn how to dance with the unknown,” as one writer put it. That might be necessary, but it will not be easy.
