The manias that consumed large segments of society as recently as just a few months ago have collapsed, and now society must deal with the consequences. Pokemon, dot.com/Internet enterprises and stock market valuations all have passed through a downward revaluation. The downdraft of this social reassessment is also affecting other areas of excessive behavior. They all are experiencing what we can call the Pokemon Adjustment.
Many of the maniacs have yet to acknowledge that the obsessions have ended, but individuals are blending their responses to the manias with a moral perspective, a concern about competitive-driven breakdowns and excesses of all kinds. Early observations suggest that they are developing a patterned response to these excesses: rejection, pullback, reassessment, redirection. This means trouble for some enterprises, but it offers opportunities for others.
