Privacy And Anonymity Vs. Profits And Control

Don’t fight the drag queens! Facebook learned that last month when it began enforcing its “real names only” policy and began deleting any profiles with names that a company algorithm suspected were inauthentic.  That triggered a fight with LGBT leaders and drag queens such as “Trannyshack” and “Latrice Royale,” who protested against the social network, and then decamped, along with hundreds of thousands of others, to Ello, a new social network that permits the use of any name, real or fake – and, relatedly, does not have ads, eliminating a major reason many online companies insist on knowing users’ true identities.
