Ready To Pay Attention Now? The Surveillance State And The State Of Surveillance

In Minneapolis,  Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents utilized technologies capable of tracking, monitoring and surveilling each citizen and migrant in the city and surrounding areas. ICE, now the highest-funded law enforcement agency in the U.S. with appropriations of $75 billion over four years, is using its fiscal windfall to embark on a hiring spree and to purchase or lease advanced surveillance technologies. Among other capabilities, these technologies can access, unlock, monitor and track smartphones and social media accounts. Tools such as license plate readers and biometrics are used to produce huge troves of synthesized data. Finally, the addition of AI and large language models aggregates, interprets and even autonomously acts on the collected data. It’s not just the government employing these tools; Employers are also ramping up use of enhanced tracking, monitoring and surveillance technologies.
