Hype and extremes have enjoyed quite a run, unbalancing the distribution of power between individuals and institutions, pushing money into areas that subsequently collapsed and disrupting personal lives in ways that only now have started to be seen as negative. With the damage from extremes getting more attention lately, society has reached a watershed moment, a period of redirection intended to rebalance what has become unbalanced in society, seeking to limit volatility and hasten a return of stability. While this is early in the process, we have noticed actions intended to rebalance the unbalanced arrangements in three areas: Big Tech and Government; Society and AI Risk; and Long-Term Viability and Resource Challenges. We are also seeing rebalancing efforts in the volume of food Americans eat, the use of automation in consumer-facing businesses and the damage to locals’ lives from overtourism. These efforts might be seen as society reverting to the mean, but balance in the use of resources and the distribution of power, sustainability in growth and restraint in the face of extremes will shape economic efforts in the years a head.
