The promise of a “smart” world has many people excited. Making dumb machines smarter and having industrial, urban and home systems that act as if they had some form of intelligence can make any user smile. Yet applications across the range of potential markets – homes, industries and cities – reveal a less complete sense of usefulness. While publicity has favored the “miracles” that can come to the Smart Home, extensive deployment and applications have also been developing in the Industrial Internet and Smart Cities realms. The Smart Homes piece of the industry has seen a wealth of products coming to market, but they are being met by some consumer skepticism about their value and how they relate to consumers’ basic needs. Meanwhile, applications in the Industrial Internet and Smart Cities pieces of the industry have shown that they can do what they are planned to do: make operations more efficient, save money and provide better operational possibilities. These kinds of applications are moving society toward a Seamless Smart World, created by a Systemic Machine-to-Machine (M2M) environment.
