The Cyclical And Secular Of The Auto Market, Part II

The transition to an access-over-assets sales model and to a market of autonomous vehicles should profoundly disrupt the typical cyclicality of the auto industry going forward. The coming years could be quite turbulent for a historically “safe cyclical” industry. However, the industry’s restructuring is likely to take longer than the restructuring that occurred in industries like publishing. Cars are incredibly complex machines that require consumer trust and reliability – you can’t undermine the legacy purveyors simply by throwing together a website or writing a cute app. Thus there is an opportunity for the legacy car makers to get out in front of their own industry’s restructuring and guide it in a way that benefi ts them.
