Signs of a pushback against the relentless advance of all things digital have started to appear. Some people are trying to withdraw from digital technology for days or weeks at a time, others are trying yoga and meditation, and still others are working to reform the digital industry by shifting it away from trying to addict would-be users to websites. Yet these efforts are generally taking place among those old enough to remember the pre-digital era, or at least the pre-smartphone era. What about the younger set, whose entire lives have been accompanied by smartphones? A picture of the world many of them experience is not a happy picture. The answer seems to be to enforce regular and constant breaks but not wholesale withdrawal for extended periods.
