The New Autocrats

The New Autocrats

They do not have the clever nicknames, but the new autocrats do have the power. The autocrats of the early twenty-first century enjoy the kinds of control and influence that the legendary dictators of the twentieth century enjoyed, although the current era’s autocrats are less murderous and more media-savvy than their predecessors. The new autocrats seem to have five critical tactics: (1) Degrade the Opposition and Concentrate Authority; (2) Intermingle Identities of Self and Country & Revive a Glorious Past; (3) Redo the Country as a Personal Project; (4) Manage Public Communications & Develop a Propaganda of Power; and (5) Use Leverage & Exploit Vulnerabilities Abroad. They are edgy, paranoid and fearful of domestic discontent, their needling of Western leaders has paid dividends and their appeal is spreading, especially in the Middle East. Moreover, the new autocrats are both taking advantage of and becoming victims of the realities that comprise the world of permeable borders.
