The shift from FOMO to JOMO – that is, from “the fear of missing out” to “the joy of missing out” – captures a subtle shift in attitude that is taking place across society. Individuals are discovering that the digital life is not necessarily a full life, and companies are discovering that an efficient system is not necessarily the most effective system. As a result, individuals are searching for the Right Mix of elements for a Fuller Life, and companies are looking for the Right Mix of contributors to a More Effective Operation. For both searches, a reassessment of all things digital is under way, not for the purpose of curtailing or limiting them but for the purpose of understanding the limits of what digital technology can provide and for utilizing the strengths of the technology. For individuals, this is a further extension of their shift from a focus on a better living to a better life. For companies, this is a further extension of their efforts to move beyond the focus on “Rampaging Efficiencies” and on to looking for better interaction among employees, with customers and with markets for the purpose of sustainable growth. The attitude shift that has led to the search for the Right Mix will likely spread to other areas of society, leading to a reset of priorities and values in those areas as well.
