The Risks of Artificial Intelligence Get Attention

Even though as a concept it is more than 80 years old, and even though we have been writing about its advances for more than a decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has become the economy’s “next big thing,” or at least a “buzzy topic for tech investing right now,” as one observer intoned. Large tech corporations are spending lavishly, building out infrastructure to support AI’s expansion, developing new products and adding capabilities to existing iterations. Lately, some core employees and researchers have expressed concern that the industry is focusing too much on profits and too little on safety. What is so unsettling about tech’s latest toy? We have found four areas of concern: Inherent Flaws; Inauthentic Content; Military Failures; and Potential Damages. The last area is where those on the inside should show unease about the existential risks of AI.
