The Water Cycle Is Broken

Water damage is getting extreme, as the hydrological (water) cycle gets accelerated and old engineering practices prove insufficient to manage water in the era of rising global temperatures. Higher and higher temperatures have disrupted the routine hydrological cycle - that is, the way in which H2O cycles through its three stages: liquid (water), gas (vapor) and solid (ice and snow). Melting ice increases water, which evaporates faster because of rising temperatures, thereby creating both droughts and excesses of vapor, which when condensed into water at higher elevations results in downpours instead of normal rainfall. Droughts are encouraging an extreme use of groundwater, which, because of faster evaporation, is not getting recharged. The whole cycle is being disrupted and will only get worse without action. So far, we have observed several solutions on offer: Slow Water, Natural Capital, Natural Capital Accounting, Counterplanning and Revamped Insurance.
