The Young Are Bummed: Seeking Strength And Perseverance

Today, young people globally are entering adulthood in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment. They face: more information of uncertain validity coming at them all the time; existential concerns such as global warming; and insecurities over career stability, wealth accumulation and home-ownership. And, while Millennials in the U.S. have experienced a quadrupling of their net worth since 2019, much of their wealth increased via nest egg assets such as 401(k)s, homes and the stock market. This collective environment has resulted in young adults, for example, making choices such as skipping a costly higher education, marrying less, and later, as well as giving birth to fewer children, later in life. Young adults are reevaluating their choices concerning the traditional markers of adulthood – education, career, home ownership, relationships and children. Increasing numbers of young adults, burdened by strained personal finances, have made the choice to support leaders who portray unbounded strength and financial accumulation, among many “masculine” virtues. This likely represents a first consequential choice made by the young as they adjust to today’s uncertain environment.
