This Can't Go On

Harsh realities about contemporary work, economic conditions and global interactions make staying calm and feeling secure more and more difficult. In fact, for many people, crisis conditions have become the norm, and the consequences of those conditions grow harder to endure. But individuals have developed coping mechanisms that have inured many of them to deeper psychological trouble. Those mechanisms fall into five categories: (1) Medicate It; (2) Escape It; (3) Soothe It; (4) Block It; and more curiously, (5) Ride It. Some individuals are seeking to move society past the conditions that require such coping tactics and are reassessing how things get done in the economy. While individuals will continue to depend on their coping mechanisms, long-term changes in the ways institutions and society operate will likely bring relief to individuals.
