Advances in technology and its capabilities, such as the “native multimodal support” of GPT-4o, mean that society is rapidly moving toward full acceptance of a new breed of chatbots – as friends, therapists, coworkers, entertainers and even lovers. As individuals accept chatbots in these roles, some humans – including influencers and entertainers – are finding their jobs made less viable or are even finding themselves threatened with replacement by avatars. This is occurring at the same time as society, especially Millennials and members of Gen Z, is confronting significant mental health challenges and these chatbots will offer increasingly lifelike opportunities for connection, feedback and encouragement.
